Industrial Control Engineering (ICE), the founding company of Morton Solar has released its new website and business initiatives for 2025. Originally founded in 2003 as an electrical engineering contractor for Caterpillar, Inc., ICE later diversified into solar energy in 2005 and installed some of the very first solar energy systems in Indiana. Today, Morton Solar has grown and has become a nationally recognized leader and award winning solar contractor while leading Indiana's market for almost 20 years. Some of the Morton's accomplishments include design & installation solar projects for the 1st net-zero library (https://youtu.be/jCLYRFFLRbw?si=KhBnbEM1MY1QXh5x) and the 1st net-zero school in the United States. ICE is a highly diversified electrical support, contracting, and engineering services company with extensive experience in design/build/programming projects for the automation & manufacturing industry. ICE is also a Certified B Corporation and will utilize their technical knowledge base to help support the water processing industry nationally.

"Our goal is to build the world's most efficient & resilient water processing facilities with the confluence of automation and sustainable energy technologies." said Brad Morton, Founder & President.

Indiana American Water plant in Newburgh, Indiana. The solar energy system designed & installed by Morton in 2017 supplies 90% of the plant's energy needs to sustainably process and supply clean drinking water to the Town of Newburgh and Warrick County in Indiana. The system saves the plant approximately $80,000 per year in energy costs, yet solar generally remains under-utilized in Southern Indiana for reasons unknown.

After graduating from University of Southern Indiana in 1993 with degrees in both electrical and mechanical engineering, Morton completed numerous projects for various manufacturers utilizing high-speed assembly, fluid power processing, robotic welding, material handling, filtration, etc. Morton has obtained certificates from Rockwell Automation in ControlLogix, ControlLogix Motion, and several other platforms. In 1998, Morton was part of an engineering team that designed and programmed manufacturing equipment for the rollout of the Caterpillar 797, which was the largest mining truck in the world at the time.

"When I look at the hydraulic system for a Caterpillar 797 mining truck, I see many similarities in fluid power control systems that can be carried over to the water processing industry to help give municipalities more control for improved quality, efficiency, and resiliency." said Morton. "Our software gives plant operators more control over Variable Frequency Drives (VFD's) to allow them to monitor and control energy demand and consumption with more precision." We believe that we can bring a 'fresh', or outside-the-box perspective of automation into the water treatment and processing industry.

The Caterpillar 797 mining truck on the final assembly stages in Decatur, Illinois. The truck was too large to transport from the plant fully intact, so the truck was not fully assembled until reaching it's final destination. The Caterpillar 797 trucks are shipped to mines and material handling locations globally.

ICE will offer the following services to water processing facilities both regionally & nationally:

* Design/Build Retrofit of PLC/HMI systems to water plants and incorporate 'Smart' technologies to utilize maximum effectiveness of VFD's and Power Monitoring hardware to minimize energy & demand costs.

* Communication & networking strategies to make plants more resilient and less prone to cyber-attacks.

* Intuitive HMI & SCADA designs to give operators control over VFD setpoints, data monitoring, and fault monitoring.

* Active Torque Monitoring - pump torque is monitored and alerts operators when pump bearings are failing and/or foreign objects impede impellors for better planning of predictive rather than reactive maintenance.

* Precise Pressure Control- our software allows pumps to operator at lower speeds during low demand periods. We can also give better pressure regulation for different types of filtration systems to optimize filter life and capabilities. This also saves significant energy consumption.

* DC Bus Technology - we offer DC Bus design & integration services to water plants to allow VFD's to operate in unison with future battery storage systems and solar energy 'behind the meter'. This virtually eliminates demand charges by a utility company and allows parts of all of the plant to operate from backup battery during emergency grid outages.

* Electrical Support & Maintenance contracts - we partner with our customers to provide 24/7 support services to help keep life flowing to their citizens.

* And, of course we offer solar & battery storage design/build capabilities.

ICE designed & programmed numerous projects for the Caterpillar, Inc plant in Decatur, Illinois. This machine filled the 797's rear-end assembly with lubricate and tested the pressure, temperature, and flow sensors that comprised the hydraulic system for the braking & bearing lubrication system. In this picture, Brad Morton is debugging the software and hardware of the machine's various hydraulic circuits. This machine also performed leak testing on the wheels and rear-end housing assembly.

Morton Solar is the regional leader in Solar& Energy Storage options for residential & small commercial sectors and will continue to offer these solutions to the residential sector.

ICE will focus on design/build/support electrical engineering and contracting for the industrial manufacturing and water processing industries.

If you are a water plant operator, or municipal or government official and would like to learn how ICE and help make your water processing plant more reliable, resilient, and efficient, please contact us via our website to request a virtual meeting. We offer both engineering & on-going support services to water plants regionally and nationally to help communities thrive with clean drinking water and sewage treatment as well.

ICE also offers electrical support services to manufacturers in the Tri-State region. Here is a solar energy system designed by ICE for AstraZeneca Pharmaceutical in Mt. Vernon, Indiana: https://youtu.be/SxPjvQQp_g4?si=eS1DTmg4fycdMCd_
