Morton Solar was founded to tackle the climate crisis by removing barriers to clean energy. Our mission is to reduce the cost of renewable energy, making it accessible to all.
In 2009, Morton Solar fought against the local utility to allow a small 2kW windmill for Haubstadt Community School to interconnect to the grid as the utility would not allow three-phase service interconnection. This led to Morton Solar filing an official complaint with the IURC, in which they deemed the utility wrong to deny interconnection and force the utility company to rewrite its tariff for renewable energy. Had Morton not filed this complaint, it’s possible that 3 phase customers may not have had the ability to install solar energy systems on their businesses in Southwest Indiana. Because of this massive accomplishment for the solar industry, then-current Senator Richard Lugar awarded Morton Solar the Lugar Energy Patriot Award.
In December 2008, Morton Solar engineered and commissioned the first net-zero public library in the U.S., Chrisney Public Library. One year later it was evident that the solar energy system not only produced enough kWh’s to offset the building's consumption. However, the library actually generated more than the building consumed and built up credits in the meter for the next year. This caught the eye of future Lt. Gov. Sue Ellsperman who awarded the library its net-zero status. Because of Lt. Gov. Sue Ellsperman, Morton Solar was introduced to then-current Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman and Gov. Daniels. This discussion about renewable energy in Southwestern Indiana led to Gov. Daniels issuing an executive order in 2011 to expand solar net-metering law for all customers of investor-owned utility companies to net-meter up to 1MW in system size. As a Certified B Corporation, we demonstrated our commitment to this mission and strive to use our business as a force for good.
